Bethesda Suing Notch

So if you haven’t heard already Notch (Creator of Minecraft) is getting sued. Why? Well Notch is creating a game that he wants to call Scrolls. Bethesda thinks the name Scrolls is too close to their game’s name The Elder Scrolls so they want Notch to change the name of his game. How can you sue someone over a single word though? That is the problem with trademarking because people who trademark a word think they own that word which is wrong. Unless it is something unique that you thought of like Metal Gear Solid you can’t sue someone over it. I am not saying The Elder Scrolls isn’t a unique name but it isn’t like Notch is using The Elder Scrolls as the name of his game. If I wanted to go out and create a game and call it The Elders I would protect my right to call it that and not let a company tell me I couldn’t.  The funniest part about all this is how Notch is making such a joke about it though. On his blog he said “I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins. If we win, you drop the lawsuit. If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you’re fine with.” Way to go Notch trying to settle game disputes by gaming that is the sign of a true gamer. Anyways I believe Notch should win but against a big company he may lose but we just have to wait to find out.
